The two stroke engine gives an engine which..

1.has high power / mass ratio

2.is easy to reverse

3.has a reduced number of moving parts and consequently requires less maintenance

Where as the 4 stroke

1.good volumetric efficiency

2.good combustion characteristics

3.positive exhaust scavenging

4.less arduous lubrication requirements due to idle strokes which allow spread of lubricating oil through bearings and around the liner.
