What is the use of ballast tank in a ship?

What is the use of ballast tank in a ship?
Ø Ballast tanks are mostly double bottom tanks, deep tanks and peak tanks. Generally these tanks filled when the ship has to sail empty in order to maintain stability and to keep the propeller and rudder sufficiently immersed.
Ø Some time if the ship to be found top heavy ballast tanks on low level is filled and ship's stability restored.
Ø Tankers will have segregated tanks.
